“BRIDGING THE GAP PROGRAM” AT MIAMI-DADE COLLEGE:
Ground Up & Rising has been an integral presence in the lives of these talented student artists. The campus demographics show a predominantly minority, lower economic demographic. The median household income of these students is $22,969 and 46,650 of the 51,329 students are minorities. These economically disadvantaged yet promising students are given the opportunity to garner exposure to a professional theatre company (GU) that gives each student an absorbing immersion into the marketplace of the theatre. Student artists get hands on experience as actors, directors, producers, playwrights, stage managers, costume/lighting/sound/scenic designers and get a comprehensive look at Arts management. The program's name “Bridging the Gap” intends to do just that: Bridge the Gap between the academic and professional environment by giving these students the opportunity to get some significant guidance from working professionals who are also minorities-many of which-came from low income homes. These professionals are successful award-winning career artists that are cultivating a life as such. It acts as grand inspiration to them to see young acclaimed artists who have steered clear of many of the hazards that affect lower income minorities. The program has between 10-15 participating students per year.
