GableStage at the Biltmore will hold three special benefit performances by the young theatre company, Ground Up & Rising. On An Average Day by Olivier Award-winning playwright John Kolvenbach will run on May 11th, 12th and 13th at 8 p.m. GableStage is known for its edgy and thought-provoking plays, which matches well with Ground Up & Rising, also known for pushing the envelope.
This is your chance to get acquainted with this new and cutting-edge organization. An Average Day will be directed by the Artistic Director of Ground Up & Rising, Arturo Fernandez—who is also in the cast opposite Arnaldo Carmouze.
The plot revolves around two brothers, alienated for years, who are reunited and remember their shadowed history—and the mysterious disappearance of their father—in this darkly humorous tale about the nature of redemption.
Ground Up & Rising aims to reach out to a broad cultural audience. It is “aimed at what we consider to be the most vital demographics of all: the young and the underserved. We wish to motivate, to inspire, to entertain, to satirize, to make people think, to make people react, to induce laughter, tears, joy and pain.”
Company members are primarily first-generation Americans, descendants from people who came to this country looking for hope and freedom from repression. It focuses on creating opportunities for local playwrights, screenwriters, directors, and actors to practice and hone their crafts while producing groundbreaking, thought-provoking theatre and film that speaks to the younger generation.
Ground Up & Rising has been building its collaborative relationship with GableStage over the past few years. It was able to bring its original play September 10th by Arturo Fernandez to more than 200 GableStage patrons during an exclusive run during the 2006 Thanksgiving weekend. GableStage also hosted special performances of Ground Up & Rising’s production of Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train during the 2007 Thanksgiving weekend.
Ticket prices are $25 each, and all proceeds will go to benefit Ground Up & Rising. For reservations call 305-445-1119 or email boxoffice@GroupUpandRising.org
